The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded a grant of £260,121 under its Skills for the Future programme to the Grazing Advice Partnership to set up and run a three-year nationwide programme of six & twelve month traineeship placements.

The aim will be to offer trainees a mix of ‘on the job’ work experience and instruction in the practical skills associated with livestock handling and conservation grazing.

Trainees will receive a bursary, mentoring support and access to GAP training courses. The tax exempt bursary will be £14,000 for twelve month placements and £7,000 for the six month placements.  A two day induction course will be provided for each trainee as well as a set of protective clothing.

The first set of placements have been arranged with a range of leading traditional livestock farms and conservation grazing schemes and will start in March/April 2011.
